John G Russell (Transport) Limited: Optimizing Logistics Operations with AI for a Sustainable Future
AI Implementation and Impact:
Business Problem
We faced supply chain inefficiencies across warehousing, road, and rail yard logistics operations.
As part of a project with Glasgow Caledonian University, funded by the Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), we conducted research and development leading to the application of AI solution to address this challenge.
Selecting the Right AI Technology and Partner
We performed a business analysis of operations across the group, and a review of relevant data sources and case study selection. We developed a prototype data integration platform showing a single source of truth, which presented clear opportunity of applying AI to optimize operations.
Technology platforms and partners for developing a data intelligence solution were considered based on flexibility to augment in house capability to achieve the solution.
Databricks Data Intelligence platform stood out for its flexibility and integration with Microsoft Azure.
Success Measures & Impact
We chose to measure the success of this project by recording and comparing metrics such as CO2 emissions across our fleet before and after the implementation of the AI.
Preliminary results show a reduction in empty running, which leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions, a reduction in operational costs and an improvement in efficiency.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The main challenges stemmed from the process of translating business nuances in a faced paced logistics environment, gaps in data and receptiveness to change in the human-centred planning operations.
Impact on Employees, Customers, and Stakeholders
The AI adoption is a work in progress, with encouraging early results. Early signs of potential efficiency gains through small, usable solutions have increased employee engagement. Customer interest in the company's proactive efforts in adopting AI has been positive and a strong buy-in from the board has been crucial in pushing this initiative forward.
Adherence to Scottish AI Strategy Values:
Our primary concern from ethics standpoint was maintaining data privacy. We addressed this by adopting human-in-the-loop approach and by upskilling employees and educating them on the potential of AI as a tool to be more efficient. We also addressed cyber security and secure cloud integration concerns within both data and AI systems.
Data Governance frameworks in our cloud platforms is part of our strategy and framework.
Sharing Best Practice:
Lessons Learned
Based on our experience, our advice is to Start with a simple solution and scale. Not every problem will be immediately solved by AI.
